Ignited Leadership: Your Body Is Not the Problem. It’s the Leader

Apr 26, 2026

The Heroine Doesn’t Hustle. She Listens.

Our bodies speak to us.
We should listen.

Simple.

Except… we don’t.

My Body Screamed. I Didn’t Listen.

You know my story.

In my early 30s, I had a full-blown mental and physical breakdown.

Not out of nowhere.

Out of 30 years of pushing, performing, achieving, producing, proving… and never resting.

On the outside?
Picture perfect.

On the inside?
My body was screaming:

STOP.

I didn’t.

So, my body stopped me.

And then I learned my lesson and lived happily ever after…

Nope.

I kept ignoring it.

Just in more socially acceptable ways.

And here’s what that looked like:

My Body Told the Truth—Over and Over Again

At 42:

Standing on a scale at Weight Watchers.

“I just had a baby…” I said.

“How old?”
“He’s almost five.”
“Months?”
“Years.”

That moment?

Truth.

It wasn’t the “baby weight” I hadn’t lost.

It was my grief that my oldest daughter was leaving for college. Leaving me.

And I was numbing my sadness with food.

At 51 (PhD program):

Shingles. Flu. Chronic headaches. No sleep. Constant fight-or-flight.

And still…

I did the 100th box jump at the CrossFit gym.

Split my shin open.

Ten stitches.

Because quitting wasn’t an option.

Early 50s:

Hot flashes. Brain fog. Depression. Anxiety. Weight gain. Exhaustion.

My body didn’t whisper anymore.

It rebelled. I no longer could control my body.

And it still took eight years for someone to listen and say, “You’re not alone.  You’re not crazy.  You’re going through perimenopause.”

What’s the Common Thread?

Me?

Yes.

But also—

A culture that taught me not to listen to my body.

A culture that says:

  • Hustle first
  • Care for everyone else first
  • Earn your rest later
  • Don’t complain
  • Don’t age
  • Don’t feel
  • Don’t stop

“Just push through.”

No Wonder We Don’t Listen

We’re not broken.

We’ve been trained to override ourselves.

To disconnect.

To abandon our own bodies in the name of:

  • Productivity
  • Worth
  • Being “good” women

I Was Living My Life… But I Wasn’t the Heroine

I was the character.

But not the one in charge.

Society was leading.

It Took Me 60 Years to Learn What My Body Knew All Along

  1. I’m numero one. Period.
    Oxygen mask on me first.
  2. I’m the heroine of my story.
I decide what gets my time, energy, and life.
  3. Self-care isn’t sweet, it’s survival.
    Boundaries. Rest. Joy. Breath. Truth.

And Now I See It Everywhere

My daughter with a broken toe

Still wanting to push, move, do.

Her body: Slow down.

My neighbor after a seizure

Still giving, doing, proving.

Her body: STOP.

She said:
“I can’t. I’m looking for my worth.”

No.

You don’t find worth by doing more.

You find it by coming home to yourself.

My colleague at the top of the proverbial mountain.

Finally, “made it.”

And felt…

Nothing.

Just exhaustion.

Her body:
Rest.

Let Me Be Clear

Your body is not the problem.

It’s the truth-teller.
It’s the warning system.
It’s the compass.

This Is Ignited Leadership

Leadership doesn’t start out there.

It starts in here.

In your body.

In your truth.

In your willingness to listen.

Pillar 1: Story is a Leadership Tool

The stories we tell shape what’s possible.

And when women tell the truth?

Culture shifts.

Pillar 2: Self-Truth Through the Body

Your body speaks first.

Always.

  • Burnout = information
  • Exhaustion = data
  • Anxiety = signal
  • Pain = truth

Leadership begins when you listen.

Pillar 3: Wholeness Over Performance

You don’t need to be:

  • Perfect
  • Polished
  • Fixed

You need to be:

Honest. Whole. Human.

Here’s the Truth We Don’t Say Enough

When women ignore their bodies…

  • We stay small
  • We stay silent
  • We stay exhausted
  • We stay disconnected

But when women listen?

  • We reclaim our lives
  • We reclaim our voices
  • We reclaim our stories

And when enough of us do that?

Culture shifts.

This Is the Heroine’s Journey

The heroine doesn’t conquer the world.

She comes home to herself.

She listens.

She trusts.

She chooses.

She leads.

Ask yourself—

  1. Where is my body trying to get my attention?
  2. What truth am I overriding?
  3. What would change if I listened?

Final thought

Your body knows.
The question is, are you finally ready to listen?
