IGNITED LEADERSHIP: What My Dog Taught Me About Radical Self-Love

(Spoiler: He’s better at this than most of us)

IT’S BUDDY.

Sometimes I have to take matters into my own paws.

I watch Michelle.

Like… really watch her. (Some might call it creepy. I call it data collection.)

She’s a solid human:

  • Walks me
  • Feeds me good (expensive) food
  • Sneaks in a Benadryl every morning (rude, but fine)
  • Takes me to doggy daycare with my crew: Snow, Noodles, Piccolo

She takes exceptional care of me.

But here’s the problem.

She doesn’t always take exceptional care of herself.

LET ME BE CLEAR (DOG TO HUMAN)

You are the most important being in your life.

Not your kids.
Not your partner.
Not your job.
Not your endless to-do list.

YOU.

And from what I’ve observed?
Y’all don’t get rewarded for burnout.

You get:

  • More work
  • More pressure
  • More expectations
  • And a side of shame for “not keeping up”

Around and around you go.

Hamster wheel energy.

Frankly?

This is bullshit.

WHAT DOGS KNOW (THAT YOU FORGOT)

We don’t read self-help books.
We don’t attend webinars.
We don’t optimize productivity.
And yet…

We are regulated, present, connected, and loved.

Let me break it down for you.

1. WE LIVE IN THE MOMENT

We don’t spiral about the past.
(And trust me, some of us have stories.)

We don’t obsess about the future.

We live here:

Now. This walk. This nap. This cuddle.

We feel safe because we allow ourselves to be here.

2. WE MAKE OURSELVES NUMERO UNO

Our day?

It revolves around:

  • Movement
  • Nourishment
  • Rest
  • Connection
  • Joy

No guilt. No justification.

We don’t earn rest. We assume it.

3. WE TAKE BREAKS (BEFORE WE BREAK)

When we’re overwhelmed?

We don’t push through.

We:

  • Pause
  • Nap
  • Go outside
  • Seek comfort

We regulate before we unravel.

4. WE KNOW TOUCH IS MEDICINE

A cuddle.
A hand on our fur.
A moment of closeness.

That’s not extra.

That’s our nervous system healing.

5. WE LOVE FULLY. PERIOD.

No conditions.
No performance.
No “am I enough?”

We just… love.

Imagine what your life would feel like if you loved yourself like that.

Buddy’s not wrong.

And if I’m honest?

This is where Ignited Leadership lives.

Not in the big, shiny moments.

But in the quiet, daily choices where we say:

I matter too.

IGNITED LEADERSHIP: THE SMALL THINGS THAT ARE ACTUALLY BIG

These aren’t “basic.”

These are:

  • Regulation
  • Integration
  • Self-trust

This is leadership from within.

CALMING YOUR NERVOUS SYSTEM

  • Take a breath before reacting
  • Say, “I need a minute”
  • Step outside
  • Turn off notifications

Take credit:
You interrupted survival mode.

USING YOUR WHOLE BRAIN

  • Sleeping on decisions
  • Listening to your gut
  • Changing your mind

Take credit:
That’s self-truth before strategy.

BEING WHOLE (NOT PERFORMING)

  • Eating when you’re hungry
  • Resting without “earning” it
  • Moving your body with care
  • Letting yourself feel

Take credit:
That’s wholeness over performance.

HOLDING BOUNDARIES

  • Saying no
  • Not responding immediately
  • Protecting your energy

Take credit:
That’s power-with yourself.

FILLING YOURSELF UP

Photo: Woman filling up

  • Doing something you enjoy
  • Sitting in silence
  • Reaching out for support

Take credit:
You came back to yourself.

THE TRUTH MOST WOMEN MISS

You think these are small.

They’re not.

They are:

  • Emotional intelligence
  • Nervous system regulation
  • Embodied leadership
  • Self-trust

This is what makes an Ignited Leader.

Not burnout.
Not overperformance.
Not pushing through.

Dr. Z Self-care Moment

Pause.

Right now.

Ask yourself:

  • What did I do today that supported me?
  • Where did I choose pause instead of pressure?
  • Where did I listen… instead of override?

Write down 3 things to take credit for.

Then say:

“That counts.”

Final Word (from Buddy)

Stop waiting until you’re exhausted to take care of yourself.

Stop acting like your needs are optional.

You don’t become worthy by burning out.

You lead…

…by coming back to yourself.

Remember to be more like your dog.

Fully present. Deeply loved. And already enough.
